AAction Recycling accepts Ferrous and Non-ferrous Metals

What’s The Difference Between Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metal?

The simple answer is that ferrous metals contain iron and non-ferrous metals do not. The more in-depth answer is that ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals each have their own distinctive properties. These properties determine the applications they are most suited for.

Examples of Ferrous Metals: Alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron and wrought iron.

Examples of Non-Ferrous Metals:  aluminum, copper, lead, zinc and tin, as well as precious metals like gold and silver.

Why Recycle metals?

According to research conducted by the US Environmental Protection Agency, recycling scrap metals can be quite beneficial to the environment. Using recycled scrap metal in place of virgin iron ore can yield:

  • 75% savings in energy.

  • 90% savings in raw materials used.

  • 86% reduction in air pollution.

  • 40% reduction in water use.

  • 76% reduction in water pollution.

  • 97% reduction in mining wastes.

Every ton of new steel made from scrap steel saves:

  • 2,458 lbs. of iron ore.

  • 1,378 lbs. of coal.

  • 117 lbs of limestone.

Energy savings from other metals include:

  • Aluminium savings of 95% energy.

  • Copper savings of 85% energy.

  • Lead savings of 65% energy.

  • Zinc savings of 60% energy.
